The True Story Behind Hatchet and the Brian Books
In the first chapter of Guts, Gary Paulsen (the author of the book Guts) describes what happened is his life that made
him write the part in Hatchet when the pilot of a small propeller plane suffered a heart-attack and was forced to crash into
the middle of the woods. Gary Paulsen had similar difficulties that all led up to him writing this section. In the second
Chapter, Brian gets attacked by a moose. Gary Paulsen has actually been attacked by a moose 5 times in the book while camping,
canoeing, and even training his sled dog team! In the third chapter, Brian gets attacked by thousands of Mosquitoes and as
Gary described, Brian was breathing them in and out and sneezing the out of his nose and when ever he slapped his face, he
killed hundreds of mosquitoes. This was also done by experience with the fact that mosquitoes can and have swarmed and killed
people. In the fourth chapter, Brian had to make a homemade bow that is able to kill animal and fish that he will have to
eat while he was stranded in the wilderness. Gary as well made a completely homemade bow (because he did not have enough money
to buy one) to hunt for a sport. In the next chapter, Brian is forced to eat the most disgusting items you could think of
that are within reason. While Gary was hunting in the woods, he normally saved the disgusting parts for other uses, but when
he is starving, he got used to eating the bad parts, like guts. In the last chapter, he talks about the differences between
getting food in the city and getting food in the wild. This chapter is also filled with recipes of food that you can make
in tight corners like making hot water without a pot.
